Frequently Asked Questions
For all of our Business GICs, with the exception of the Cashable GIC and Compound Investment Certificate ($1000 minimum), the minimum initial investment is $1,000 for terms less than one year and $500 for terms equal to or greater than one year.
The minimum initial investments are in the currency of the GIC.
Once the initial investment is made, you cannot add money to an existing Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). The return on your GIC is based on the original amount invested, the interest rate that was set at that time, and the funds staying in the investment for the full term. If you have additional money you’d like to invest, you can buy a new GIC or explore other investment savings options.
For all of our cashable or redeemable Business GICs, there are no penalties for early withdrawal, but you will be subject to adjusted interest rates.
When you cash a GIC, you get your principal back along with interest earned at the GIC's standard rate. That means that if you have a GIC designed to be 'cashable' before the end of its term, your principal earns full interest for as long as the money remains in your GIC.
Some cashable GICs have restrictions on specific portions of your term during which you can access your funds at the full rate of return.
When you have a GIC designed to be 'redeemable' before the end of its term, you can still get your full principal back, but with interest earned at a lower rate than if you left your principal in the GIC for the full term.
Redeemable GICs are typically redeemable in any point in your term—though how soon you redeem your principal may affect how much interest you earn.
